Why he might be annoying
Of the first five presidents, he was the only one not re-elected.
He is the first sitting president to be defeated (by Thomas Jefferson, 1801).
He and Jefferson, originally friendly colleagues, disliked each other.
Both of them were dying, and Adams still competing with Jefferson, taking his last breath said, 'Thomas Jefferson still lives!,' not realizing that he outlived Jefferson by a couple of hours.
Both he and Jefferson died on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1826).
During his administration, the Alien and Sedition acts were passed, which made it much harder to become a U.S. Citizen and easier to be deported.
He disliked the French and used these acts to rid the country of many French nationalists.
He wanted to wage war against France.
He was the last President of the Federalist party.
His last acts as President was to appoint many Federalists into government jobs.
He refused to attend his successor, President Jefferson's, inauguration.
Greatly disappointed by his lose to Jefferson, he said if he could live life over, he would rather be a shoe maker than an American statesman.
Why he might not be annoying
He was the strongest proponent for the Declaration of Independence.
He reconciled his friendship with Thomas Jefferson, and from that point on they traded good natured barbs (1811).
He held executive office for the first twelve years of The United States presidency.
